Volunteers
Needed!!
Because
the size of our league has grown so large, we are always in need of volunteers
to help us during the fall season. At registration you will be asked to help in
coaching, field preparation, equipment distribution, awards distribution, and
light administrative duties. Due to the lack of volunteer help in the past, we
must insist that everyone volunteer to help in at least one area or pay a $20
fee in lieu of volunteering. Below are a few
of the volunteer positions that need to be filled. Please have your calendar
with you when you register so you will be able to fulfill the task you sign up for.

Earring & Eyeglass Alert
Your child
can not play soccer with earrings or any other jewelry. This includes ears,
eyes, lips, etc. that have just been pierced. Taping them does not prevent
serious injury. Please have newly pierced ears (or eye, lip, etc) done 6-8
weeks prior to the start of the soccer season. Also, for grades 5-12, some
officials will not let you play with glasses unless they are safety glasses or
goggles. Most officials will not say anything but if they do your child won’t
be allowed to play with eyeglasses.
Soccer
Do you have soccer gear that is no longer
used? Please pass it on to children who cannot otherwise afford it.
All gear will be donated first locally to children in need in the
Soccer Cleats, soccer bags,
indoor soccer shoes, warm-ups, socks, sweat shirts, shin guards, shorts,
T-shirts, etc.
Pease bring donated items to travel tryouts. Collection bins will be at
the fields.

TRAVEL TRYOUT PROCESS
For the younger
age groups (U-9-10-11) tryouts are designed to have the head coach of an age
group conducting the tryout. The evaluators used are supposed to be people who
do not have children involved in the tryout. All the evaluators are volunteers.
We are at the mercy of volunteers showing up for the tryout. If enough
independent volunteers do not show up at the tryout the head coach must enlist
the help of parents with kids involved in the tryouts. Unfortunately, this is
not always the best and most ideal situation but it is the best we can do. The
older age groups are generally evaluated by the Head Coach and Assistant Coach
of the A and B teams.
While the
evaluators, independent or not, score the kids and rank the kids the ultimate
player selection is at the discretion of the head coach. For returning teams,
tryouts are not the only criteria used in evaluating the players.
Some of the
criteria the head coach will use in selecting a player are:
There is no
specific weighting to any of the above criteria.
The tryout
process is for a head coach to be able to pick players for the upcoming season.
The results or placing of players within these evaluations will not be made
public. There will be no written or verbal evaluation given to the player or
the parent. If a player or parent is
looking for this type of evaluation they should hire a private trainer and have
them assess their child’s strengths and weaknesses.
Attendance at
both tryouts is preferable. Missing a tryout can have an adverse effect on the
evaluation. This is more true in the case of a player the coach has not seen
play before.
Every coach
strives to select the best possible talent available. The goal is to field the
most talented group of players at a given age. However, mistakes are made;
especially in the younger age groups. Tryouts in any sport are not an exact
science. The only thing for certain is that there will be mistakes made during
the U-9 selection process and many times during the U-10 selection process.
If your child
does not make a travel team please encourage them to play intramurals, practice
year round and tryout the following year. It is a year round commitment to practice
to make a travel team. If your child makes the “B” team and you or they feel
they should have made the “A” team, again, encourage them to make the best of
the situation and use the year to be the best player on the team and try again
next year. There are always “bubble players”; 5-6 players who either are the
last 3 on the “A” team or the first 3 on the “B” team. What is the deciding
factor in this selection is impossible to say. We can only hope that each child
makes the best of their situation and works hard for the goals they have set
for themselves.
We hope this
clears up many of the questions that have been raised about tryouts. It’s not a
perfect system, but we do our best to make it fair.
TEYSA REFEREE PROGRAM
TEYSA is always looking for youth referees. We
will provide training and resources. If you are interested, please inquire by
calling John Dautrich at 610-688-1163 or email him at Jumpcd@aol.com. You must be 12 years or
older. Register yourself online
so that you can be sure to be contacted.
Certified Referees are used for grades 5 through
12. Youth referees are used for grades K through 4. TEYSA has adopted a zero
tolerance policy of abuse from parents, players and coaches. We pay
the youth refs before each game as follows:
K-$6/game, 1st - $7/game, 2nd
grade - $9/game, 3rd grade - $12/game and 4th grade - $18/game.
Most youth
refs work two to three games on a given Saturday.
SAFETY AROUND SOCCER
GOALS
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, since
1979 there have been multiple deaths and serious injuries from soccer goals
tipping and crashing onto children. Most of these deaths and injuries were the
result of children climbing or hanging on the goals. TEYSA is committed to providing
a safe environment for children and we need your help to do this. We,
therefore, request that you communicate to all children that ANY CLIMBING OR HANGING ON SOCCER GOALS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Also, if you move a goal, please
replace the sandbag on the goal to secure it. Always check to make sure the
sandbag is in place on top of the goal legs.
DO NOT PLAY WITHOUT THE SANDBAG ON THE GOAL! Thank you for your help.
